Cailan Cumming is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Geomatics at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). She has conducted remote sensing research in Earth and planetary sciences at the NASA Ames Research Center and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. She plans to conduct research on the co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies this year at the UAA Physics and Astronomy Department.
Alongside her studies and scientific research, Cailan has an established career in international law and policy. Originally from Northern California, she has lived in various parts of the world supporting actors involved in peace and conflict processes. Her interdisciplinary background in policy, society, science, and technology allows her to bridge the technical and human dimensions of complex problems, approach novel questions from a systems-level perspective, and draw connections across traditionally distinct fields.
When not focused on her studies or work, she can be found mountaineering, climbing, or snowboarding.
