Open Science Webinar: Making Arctic Science Open Science
The one-hour virtual event explored approaches to making Arctic social and environmental science open science within the context of collaborative and convergent research, while upholding Indigenous data sovereignty. Panelists included Dr. Julia Lowndes of Openscapes and NCEAS UC Santa Barbara, Matt Fisher of the QGreenland project at NSIDC, and Mohammad Afzal Shadab of the US Association of Polar Early Career Scientists and the University of Texas at Austin.

Science Storytelling Series - Facilitating Community Stories
The NNA-CO education and outreach team hosted a hands-on session focused on practicing how to facilitate community storytelling around project science topics. The workshop shared lesson plans and techniques to help participants strengthen their engagement and outreach efforts. The session was presented by Dr. Katie Villano Spellman, a Research Associate Professor at UAF’s International Arctic Research Center, who led and collaborated on science education and public participation projects including Arctic and Earth SIGNs, Winterberry Citizen Science, Fostering Science, and Fresh Eyes on Ice.

Science Storytelling Series - Creating Stories that Stick
The NNA-CO hosted a series of virtual workshops on science storytelling, culminating in a presentation of stories at the NNA Annual Community Meeting in March 2024. One event focused on helping participants find a compelling “hook” to draw audiences into their stories, with Lianna Nixon guiding attendees through the process of creating “stories that stick” during the July 19 session.

Special Session with NSF Representatives to Discuss Proposed Revisions in the PAPPG Related to Tribal Engagement
The NNA-CO hosted a special session with National Science Foundation (NSF) representatives to discuss proposed draft revisions to the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG; NSF 24-1) regarding Tribal engagement when research may impact Tribal interests and resources. NSF Head of Policy Jean Feldman provided an overview of the PAPPG and the revision process, followed by Caroline Blanco, who shared background on the proposed revisions. The session concluded with a Q&A with participants.

Co-production of Knowledge (CPK) Day at Alaska Indigenous Research Program
The NNA-CO Community Extension Office co-hosted a CPK Day during the Alaska Indigenous Research Program with ANTHC and APU. The morning session featured keynote speakers and CPK practitioners who shared foundational knowledge, framing, and case studies, and the afternoon included “knowledge bundle” sharing and a focus group that provided peer-based feedback on the draft CPK Toolkit and associated course curriculum.
